Overview
The Nusantara universe is divided into three interconnected realms — a cosmic structure that defines the vertical axis of existence. These realms are not separate worlds in the sense of different planets or dimensions; they are layers of the same world, stacked vertically like the floors of a house.
The three realms are:

The Upper Realm — Kahyangan in Balinese, Suralaya in Javanese — is the realm of the gods, celestial beings, and divine forces. It is the source of spiritual energy and cosmic order.

The Order of the Gods

The Upper Realm is not a place of eternal peace. The gods have their own conflicts: rivalries between deities, disputes over cosmic order, and occasional wars. The Bharatayuddha — the war of the mahabharata — is understood in the Javanese tradition as a conflict that echoes in both the Upper and Middle Realms.
The Cosmic Role
The Upper Realm is the source of divine law (dharma) and cosmic order (karma). From here, the gods govern the cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction. The 210-day-contract, in some interpretations, is an agreement between the Upper Realm and the Middle Realm — a pact that defines the flow of spiritual energy between the two.
The Upper Realm and the Dark Lines

The Under Realm and the Dark Lines
The Fourth Realm is sometimes described as the space beneath the Under Realm — the layer that lies below the domain of spirits and ancestors. The Under Realm is the threshold; the Fourth Realm is the abyss beyond.
