The Edge of Java

The Blambangan Peninsula is the southeasternmost tip of Java, a land of wild beauty and deep history. It is the site of the Blambangan Kingdom, the last Hindu-Buddhist outpost in Java, and home to the sacred Alas Purwo National Park—a place where the mythic origins of Java and the last echoes of its pre-Islamic past converge in a landscape of forest, savanna, and sea.

Geography

The peninsula is covered by the Alas Purwo National Park, a 43,420-hectare wilderness of monsoon forest, savanna, and pristine beaches. It is one of the last remaining habitats of the Javan banteng and Javan leopard.

History

The Blambangan Peninsula was the heartland of the Blambangan Kingdom, the last Hindu-Buddhist kingdom in Java. After the fall of Majapahit in the 16th century, Blambangan survived for over a century on this peninsula, isolated from the Islamic sultanates of the west, until it was conquered by the Mataram Sultanate in the 18th century.

Mythology

In Javanese tradition, the Blambangan Peninsula is the place where the island of Java first emerged from the ocean—the “First Forest” (Alas Purwo). It is considered a sacred landscape, a place of origins and spiritual power.

In a village on the Blambangan Peninsula, an old man named Mbah Sastro gazes out at the sea. He has lived here all his life, on the edge of Java, where the land meets the ocean. He says: “This is the place where Java began. The first land to emerge from the sea, the first forest to grow, the first people to walk. When you stand here, you are standing at the beginning of everything.”
