Banyuwangi
English (EN)
Banyuwangi is the easternmost city on the island of Java, Indonesia, and the capital of East Java’s Banyuwangi Regency. It is the gateway to Bali, located just across the Bali Strait, and is famous for the natural wonder of Mount Ijen’s blue fire.
Mount Ijen and the Blue Fire
Mount Ijen is an active volcano with the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. At night, sulfur gases ignite to produce an electric-blue flame (blue fire), one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth. The Ijen crater is also the site of sulfur mining, with local miners working in extreme conditions.
Cultural Heritage
Banyuwangi is the center of the Osing culture, a distinct Javanese sub-ethnic group with its own language and traditions. The city is known for the Gandrung dance and the annual Rujak Uleg festival.
Gateway to Bali
The Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi serves as the main ferry crossing to Gilimanuk, Bali, making it a vital transit point for travelers and goods.
