The First Forest

Alas Purwo National Park is a wild and sacred national park located on the Blambangan Peninsula, the southeastern tip of Java, in the regency of Banyuwangi, East Java. Its name means “First Forest” in Javanese (alas = forest, purwo = beginning/first)—a name that reflects its mythological status as the place where the island of Java emerged from the ocean.

Geography and Ecology

Alas Purwo covers 43,420 hectares of diverse landscapes: monsoon forest, savanna, mangroves, coral reefs, and pristine beaches. The park is home to:

  • Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas), one of the rarest leopard subspecies

Story Hook: The Pilgrim’s Return

In a village at the edge of Alas Purwo, an old woman named Nyai prepares for her final pilgrimage. She has visited the holy spring, Purwa Tirtha, every year for seventy years—each time making the arduous journey through the forest to pray at the place where Java began. But this time, she knows she may not return. She is old, and her body is failing. She asks her grandson, Wira, to accompany her one last time. Wira is a young man who has left the village for the city, who has forgotten the old rituals, who doubts the power of the spirits. As they walk through the forest, Nyai speaks to the trees, to the spirits, to the ancestors. She remembers the Blambangan kingdom, the fall of Majapahit, the coming of Islam, the Dutch, the Japanese, the modern nation. She has seen it all, and she has never stopped believing that Alas Purwo is sacred.
