The Last Hindu Kingdom of Java

The Blambangan Kingdom was the last Hindu-Buddhist kingdom in Java. It survived on the easternmost peninsula—the Blambangan Peninsula—for over a century after the fall of Majapahit. Its story is one of resistance, resilience, and the fading of an era. When the kingdom finally fell to the Mataram Sultanate in the 18th century, its people carried their traditions across the sea to Bali, where they survive to this day.

History

After the fall of Majapahit in the early 16th century, the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Blambangan survived as the last remnant of the old order. Isolated from the Islamic sultanates of the west, the kingdom maintained its traditions for over a century. In the 18th century, the Mataram Sultanate conquered the kingdom. The Blambangan people fled to Bali, carrying their sacred objects, rituals, and traditions with them.

The Blambangan exile to Bali was a watershed moment in Indonesian history. The refugees brought with them Javanese Hindu traditions, which blended with Balinese culture, enriching the island’s religious and cultural life.

Story Hook: The Exile’s Lament

In 1743, as the Mataram forces approached the Blambangan palace, the king gathered his people. He said: “We have been the last guardians of the old traditions. We have kept the fire burning for over a century. Now, the fire will go out—but the stories will not die. They will travel with you across the sea to Bali. One day, the descendants of Blambangan will remember that they were once the last Hindus of Java.”
