The Mataram Sultanate was a powerful Islamic sultanate in Java that rose to prominence in the late 16th century. It succeeded the Demak Sultanate and became the dominant power in Central and East Java until the 18th century.

Territory

At its peak, Mataram controlled much of Java and exerted influence over parts of sumatra and Bali. Its capital moved from Kotagede to Surakarta.

Cultural Legacy

Mataram left a lasting cultural and political legacy in Java, including the preservation of Javanese traditions within an Islamic framework. The sultanate nurtured classical Javanese arts, including wayang kulit and gamelan music.

Division

In 1755, the Mataram Sultanate was divided into two courts: the Surakarta Sunanate and the Yogyakarta Sultanate, following the Treaty of Giyanti.
