The Royal City
Kartasura is a historical city in Central Java, once the capital of the Mataram Sultanate from 1680 to 1745. The Royal City
Kartasura was built by Sultan Amangkurat II as the new capital of the Mataram Sultanate. The city was designed as a royal fortress, with walls, gates, and a palace. It was the center of Javanese political and spiritual power for over sixty years.
The Decline
In 1745, the capital was moved to Surakarta (Solo). Kartasura was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. The city’s decline symbolized the decline of Javanese power and the rise of Dutch influence.

Story Hook: The Abandoned Palace
In 1745, the court of Mataram packed its belongings and moved from Kartasura to Surakarta. The palace was abandoned, the walls crumbled, the gardens overgrown. A palace guard stood at the gate, watching the procession leave. He said: “We are leaving the city of our kings. But we will not forget it. The stones will remember.”
“We leave this palace behind. But the stones will remember. They will remember the kings who ruled here, the ceremonies that filled these halls, the prayers that rose from these walls. The stones will remember — even when the memory fades.” — A palace guard
