Amangkurat III

Amangkurat III (c. 1675–1726) was the sixth sultan of the Mataram Sultanate, reigning briefly from 1703 to 1704. His reign was marked by civil war, Dutch intervention, and the final erosion of Javanese sovereignty. His defeat by his brother, supported by the VOC, set the stage for the complete Dutch colonization of Java.

The Succession Crisis
Upon the death of Amangkurat II, a succession crisis erupted. Amangkurat III claimed the throne, but his brother, supported by the VOC, challenged him. The VOC, seeking to consolidate its control over Java, intervened militarily, leading to a civil war that devastated the Mataram heartland.
The Dutch Intervention
The VOC saw an opportunity to weaken Mataram by supporting a rival claimant. With Dutch military backing, Amangkurat III’s brother defeated him in 1704. Amangkurat III was forced to flee and later captured and exiled to Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), where he died in 1726.
Legacy
Amangkurat III’s defeat marked the end of Mataram’s independent power. The VOC now effectively controlled the sultanate, reducing it to a vassal state.

Story Hook: The Exiled King
In 1705, a captured king, Amangkurat III, was placed on a VOC ship bound for Ceylon. He was a king without a kingdom, a ruler without a throne. As the ship sailed past the coast of Java, he watched his homeland disappear over the horizon. He turned to his Dutch captor and asked: “Will my people remember me?”
“I am a king without a crown, a ruler without a land. They have taken my throne, my palace, my kingdom. But they cannot take my name. They cannot take the story of what I tried to do.
