The Rebellion That Shook Java

The Trunajaya Rebellion (1674–1680) was one of the most significant uprisings in Javanese history. It pitted the forces of Trunajaya — a prince from Madura — against the Mataram Sultanate and its Dutch allies, the VOC .

What made this rebellion remarkable was its multi-ethnic character: Trunajaya’s army included Madurese, Javanese, Makassarese (fleeing the defeat of Gowa), and Chinese mercenaries.

Historical Context

The roots of the rebellion lay in the decline of the Mataram Sultanate under Sultan Amangkurat I (1646–1677). Amangkurat I’s rule was characterized by:

FactorDescription
Brutal PurgesHe executed thousands of Islamic clerics and nobles
Economic DeclineThe sultanate’s treasury was depleted
Alienation of PeripheryCoastal regions like Madura and Surabaya felt neglected

Trunajaya, the grandson of the Madurese prince Cakraningrat, saw an opportunity to challenge Mataram’s dominance.

The Course of the War

DateEvent
1674Trunajaya’s forces began raiding Mataram cities in eastern Java
1676A 9,000-strong rebel army invaded Java from Madura
1676Rebels captured Surabaya, the key port of eastern Java
January 1677Mataram’s army sent to crush the rebellion was defeated at the Battle of Gegodog
May 1677The VOC launched an attack on Surabaya, driving the rebels inland
August 1678The VOC-Mataram coalition launched a major offensive toward Kediri
25 November 1678The Battle of Kediri — the rebels were decisively defeated

The Battle of Surabaya (May 1677)

The VOC, alarmed by the rebellion’s success, intervened to protect its commercial interests. A Dutch force of 1,500 troops defeated Trunajaya’s forces at Surabaya (4–13 May 1677), forcing the rebels to retreat inland to Kediri.

The Battle of Kediri (25 November 1678)

The decisive battle of the war occurred at Kediri, Trunajaya’s stronghold. A combined VOC-Mataram force:

CommanderForce
Anthonio Hurdt (VOC)Dutch soldiers, European mercenaries
Amangkurat IIMataram’s royal army
TotalSeveral thousand troops

The rebels fought fiercely but were overwhelmed. Trunajaya himself was captured and executed.

The Aftermath

ImpactDescription
Mataram’s WeaknessThe sultanate was severely weakened, heavily indebted to the VOC
Dutch LeverageThe VOC used its “victory” to extract concessions from Mataram
Makassarese DiasporaGowa’s defeated warriors, now dispersed across Java, continued to be a source of instability
Japanese-in-ExileSome Makassarese troops under Trunajaya were later exiled to Ceylon (Sri Lanka)

The Makassarese Connection

Many of Trunajaya’s troops were Makassarese warriors who had fled Sulawesi after the makassar-war (1666-1669). The VOC’s earlier conquest of Gowa had created a pool of battle-hardened, displaced soldiers — and they found a new leader in Trunajaya.

Dark Line Interface

Dark LineConnection
Line 3: 210-Day ContractThe rebellion followed a rhythm of attack and retreat — was it driven by the 210-day cycle of power?
Line 4: Islamization CorridorThe rebellion represented a coalition of coastal, maritime communities against an inland Javanese kingdom — a conflict between Islamized coast and syncretic interior
