VOC (Dutch East India Company)
English (EN)
The VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), or Dutch East India Company, was the world’s first multinational corporation. Founded in 1602, it colonized the Indonesian archipelago for over two centuries and established the foundations of Dutch colonial rule in Southeast Asia.
Monopoly of Spices
The VOC established a brutal monopoly over the spice trade — nutmeg, mace, and cloves — controlling production and ruthlessly eliminating competition. The company used violence and coercion to enforce its dominance, particularly in the Banda Islands, where much of the indigenous population was massacred or enslaved.
Batavia
In 1619, the VOC conquered Jakarta and renamed it Batavia, establishing it as the company’s administrative headquarters. Batavia grew into one of Southeast Asia’s largest trading ports, a hub for the Dutch colonial empire.
Decline and Dissolution
By the 18th century, the VOC was plagued by corruption, declining profits, and increasing competition from the British East India Company. The company was formally dissolved in 1800, and its territories and debts were taken over by the Dutch state, marking the beginning of the Dutch East Indies period.
Legacy
The VOC’s legacy is deeply controversial. It brought wealth to the Netherlands but inflicted immense suffering on the Indonesian people. The company’s infrastructure and administrative systems laid the groundwork for Dutch colonial rule that lasted until 1945.
