The War That Destroyed Java’s Last Great Islamic Sultanate

The Bantam War (1656–1683) was the conflict that ended the Sultanate of Bantam’s independence and brought western Java under Dutch colonial control. It was a war of succession, betrayal, and colonial conquest — a classic example of the VOC’s strategy of “divide and rule.”

Historical Context

The Sultanate of Bantam was one of the most powerful Islamic states in western Java. Its capital, Bantam (modern-day Banten, near the western tip of Java), was a thriving port that controlled the Sunda Strait — a critical choke point for the pepper trade.

FactorDescription
Strategic LocationBantam controlled access to the Sunda Strait
Pepper TradeBantam was a major exporter of pepper to Europe and Asia
VOC RivalryThe VOC sought to monopolize the pepper trade
British PresenceBantam was also open to English traders, which angered the VOC

The Course of the War

The war was fought in phases from 1656 to 1683, but the decisive conflict occurred between 1680 and 1683.

YearEvent
1656Hostilities began between the VOC and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa of Bantam
1676The VOC opened negotiations with Sultan Ageng’s son, Sultan Haji, offering to support his claim to the throne in exchange for trade concessions
1680Sultan Haji, sensing an opportunity, rebelled against his father — the civil war began
1682VOC forces arrived to support Sultan Haji; they besieged Bantam
1683Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa was defeated and captured by his son and the VOC
1683Sultan Haji signed a treaty placing Bantam under VOC control

The Father-Son Betrayal

The war’s turning point was the betrayal of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa by his own son, Sultan Haji (also known as Sultan Haji Abdul Fath).

CharacterRole
Sultan Ageng TirtayasaThe rightful Sultan — determined to resist Dutch control and maintain Bantam’s independence
Sultan HajiThe son — ambitious, impatient, and willing to sacrifice his father for the throne
VOCThe puppet master — exploiting the succession dispute to subjugate Bantam

Sultan Haji’s rebellion was the VOC’s entry point. The Dutch had tried to conquer Bantam for decades but failed. The succession crisis gave them the opportunity they needed.

The Siege of Bantam (1682)

In 1682, a VOC fleet blockaded Bantam and bombarded the city. Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa’s forces were outmatched; the Sultan was captured and exiled to a fortress in Batavia.

The Treaty of 1683

The treaty signed between Sultan Haji and the VOC placed Bantam under Dutch control:

ProvisionImplication
Trade MonopolyThe VOC gained exclusive rights to Bantam’s pepper trade
Dutch FortressThe VOC built a fortress in Bantam
VassalageBantam became a VOC vassal state
Loss of PowerSultan Haji ruled only with VOC approval

The Fall of a Sultan

Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, once a powerful ruler, spent his final years in exile. He died in 1692 in captivity.

“Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa — a king who lost his throne, his freedom, and his son — in a single war.”
