Perdagangan Rempah

English (EN)

The spice trade was the most lucrative commerce in the world from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Spices—particularly cloves, nutmeg, and mace from the Maluku Islands (the Moluccas)—were worth more than gold in Europe, valued for preserving food, masking the taste of salted meat, and as medicines.

Origins

The spice trade was originally controlled by Arab and Indian merchants, who brought spices from the Maluku Islands to European markets via the Indian Ocean and Middle East. The exact location of the Spice Islands was a closely guarded secret.

Portuguese Era (1511–1641)

The Portuguese captured Malacca in 1511 under Albuquerque, gaining direct access to the spice trade. They established forts in Ternate and Tidore but never achieved a complete monopoly.

Dutch VOC Era (1602–1799)

The VOC established a brutal monopoly over the spice trade, enforcing it through genocide (Banda Massacre, 1621), restricting cultivation to specific islands, and destroying surplus plants.

End of the Monopoly

In the 1760s, French horticulturist Pierre Poivre smuggled live nutmeg and clove plants to Mauritius and Réunion, breaking the Dutch monopoly. Cultivation spread to other tropical regions, collapsing spice prices.

Bahasa Indonesia (ID)
