Malacca Sultanate
English (EN)
The Malacca Sultanate (c. 1400–1511) was the preeminent Malay-Muslim dynasty that ruled the great entrepôt of malacca and its dependencies, providing Malay history with its golden age. It controlled the Strait of Malacca, the main sea route between India and China, and served as the primary conduit for the diffusion of Islam from sumatra into the Malay Peninsula and Java.
Foundation
The founder and first ruler was Paramesvara, a Sumatran prince who had fled Palembang under Javanese attack. He established himself briefly in Tumasik (now singapore) and settled in Malacca in the last years of the 14th century. Paramesvara converted to Islam and took the title Sultan Iskandar Shah in 1414.
Strategic Location
Malacca commanded the main sea route through the strait that now bears its name. The Ming court selected strategic Melaka as their preferred intermediary port-of-trade, making it the prominent transitional marketplace at the intersection of the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, South China and Java Sea networks.
Alliance with Zheng He
One of the most consequential factors in Malacca’s rise was its alliance with Admiral Zheng He and the Ming dynasty. Zheng He’s Voyages visited Malacca multiple times between 1405 and 1433, recognizing its strategic value. The Ming court granted formal protection to Malacca, allowing it to resist Siamese expansion and develop into the preeminent commercial hub of Southeast Asia.
This relationship was mutually beneficial: Malacca gained protection and trade access, while the Ming dynasty secured a key ally controlling the most important maritime passage between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The alliance also brought Chinese Muslim traders to Malacca, contributing to the Islamic character of the sultanate.
Commercial Supremacy
By the 1430s, Malacca had become the preeminent commercial emporium in Southeast Asia. At its height in the late 15th century, the city hosted some 15,000 merchants of many nationalities, including Chinese, Arabs, Persians, and Indians. To handle the greatly increased commerce, four shabunders were appointed to oversee traders from four regions: the Malay Archipelago, China, and western and southeastern India.
Islamization and Malay Civilization
The rulers of Malacca accepted Islam precisely in order to attract Muslim and Javanese traders to their port. As a bustling international trading port, Malacca emerged as a centre for Islamic learning and dissemination, and encouraged the development of the Malay language, literature and arts. For centuries, Malacca has been held up as an exemplar of Malay-Muslim civilization, establishing systems of trade, diplomacy, and governance that persisted well into the 19th century.
The Fall
In 1511, the Portuguese governor of India, Afonso de Albuquerque, conquered Malacca with a force of around 1,200 men and seventeen ships. The capture was part of a plan by King Manuel I to control trade and thwart Muslim shipping in the Indian Ocean. The sultan, Mahmud Shah, fled and later founded the kingdom of Johor.
