Indonesian Literature
English (EN)
Overview
Indonesian literature is not a single tradition but a constellation of traditions — Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Malay, and many others — each with its own languages, forms, and spiritual foundations. The literature of the archipelago is a record of its spiritual journey: from the animist hymns of the ancient kingdoms to the Hindu-Buddhist kakawin of the Majapahit era, from the Islamic hikayat of the Malay world to the modern novels of independent Indonesia.
The Three Great Periods
Indonesian literature can be divided into three great periods, each corresponding to a spiritual and political transformation:
| Period | Era | Language | Key Forms | Representative Works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classical (8th-15th c.) | Hindu-Buddhist | Old Javanese (Kawi), Old Sundanese | Kakawin (poetry), Prasasti (inscriptions) | Kakawin Ramayana, Nagarakretagama, Sutasoma, Arjuna Wiwaha |
| Islamic/Classical Malay (15th-19th c.) | Islamic | Malay, Javanese (Pegon) | Hikayat (romances), Babad (chronicles), Serat (poetry) | Hikayat Hang Tuah, Sejarah Melayu, Babad Tanah Jawi, Serat Centhini |
| Modern (20th c.-present) | National | Indonesian, regional languages | Novels, short stories, poetry, drama | Siti Nurbaya, Burung-Burung Manyar, Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk |
The Classical Period: Kakawin and the Court Tradition
The classical period of Indonesian literature was centered on the courts of Java, Bali, and Sumatra. The primary form was the kakawin — a type of epic poetry written in Old Javanese (Kawi), influenced by Sanskrit literary forms but distinctly Javanese in spirit.
Key Works
| Work | Date | Author | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kakawin Ramayana | 9th c. | Unknown | Javanese adaptation of the Ramayana |
| Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha | 11th c. | Mpu Kanwa | Arjuna’s meditation and marriage |
| Nagarakretagama | 1365 | Mpu Prapanca | Description of Majapahit’s territory |
| Sutasoma | 14th c. | Mpu Tantular | Unity of Buddhist and Shivaite teachings — source of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika |
| Kakawin Bharatayuddha | 12th c. | Mpu Sedah, Mpu Panuluh | Javanese version of the Mahabharata war |
The classical period was also the source of the panji cycle — a series of romantic epics that spread across Southeast Asia, influencing the literature of Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
The Islamic Period: Hikayat and the Malay World
The arrival of Islam in the 15th century transformed the literary landscape. The Malay language became the primary literary medium, and the hikayat — a form of romance, chronicle, or epic — became the dominant form.
Key Works
| Work | Date | Author | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) | 16th c. | Tun Sri Lanang | History of the Malacca Sultanate |
| Hikayat Hang Tuah | 17th c. | Unknown | Epic of the Malaccan warrior Hang Tuah |
| Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai | 14th-15th c. | Unknown | History of Samudra Pasai |
| Babad Tanah Jawi | 18th c. | Unknown | Chronicle of Javanese kings and the Wali Songo |
| Serat Centhini | 18th-19th c. | R.Ng. Ronggowarsito et al. | Encyclopedic Javanese text on mysticism, love, and religion |
The Modern Period: The Novel and the Nation
The modern period of Indonesian literature began with the nationalist movement in the early 20th century. The novel became the primary form, and the language was Indonesian — the national language that was itself a literary creation.
Key Works
| Work | Date | Author | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siti Nurbaya | 1922 | Marah Rusli | A tale of love and colonial injustice |
| Layar Terkembang | 1936 | Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana | The conflict between tradition and modernity |
| Atheis | 1949 | Achdiat K. Mihardja | The search for meaning in post-revolution Indonesia |
| Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk | 1982 | Ahmad Tohari | The story of a village dancer and the 1965 upheaval |
| Burung-Burung Manyar | 1981 | Y.B. Mangunwijaya | A post-colonial novel about identity and nation |
Literature and the Dark Lines
The Fourth Realm
Many classical and modern works contain references to the Fourth Realm — often as a place of mystery, danger, or transformation. The old kakawin and hikayat describe the hidden layer of the cosmos, and the modern novels often evoke it as a metaphor for the subconscious or the unknown.
The Mana Curse
The mana-curse is reflected in the literature of the archipelago. The classical works are full of spiritual power; the Islamic works reinterpret that power; the modern works mourn its loss.
The 210-Day Contract
The 210-day-contract appears in the structure of many Javanese texts, particularly the babad and serat, which are often organized around the 210-day cycles.
Storytelling Potential
For creators, Indonesian literature offers:
- A source of characters and plots — the stories of the Panji cycle, Hang Tuah, and the wayang are rich with narrative material.
- A literary model — the structure of the hikayat and kakawin offers a model for epic storytelling.
- A record of spiritual transformation — the changing spiritual landscape of the archipelago is recorded in its literature.
