The Ramayana is one of the two great Sanskrit epics of ancient India, attributed to the sage Valmiki. Alongside the Mahabharata, it forms the foundational narrative of Hindu culture—and, like its counterpart, has been transformed into a living tradition across the Indonesian archipelago.

The Core Story
Prince Rama is exiled from his kingdom, and his wife Sita is abducted by the demon king Rawana. With the help of Hanuman and an army of monkeys, Rama rescues Sita and returns to Ayodhya to become king.

The Ramayana has been adapted into Javanese and Balinese performances, literature, and art:

Javanese Interpretations
