Srivijaya Empire

English (EN)

Srivijaya was a powerful Buddhist maritime empire based on the island of sumatra, Indonesia. It dominated trade in Southeast Asia from the 7th to the 13th centuries.

Decline

Srivijaya gradually declined in the 11th century due to the rise of the Chola Empire and Javanese kingdoms, eventually falling to the Majapahit Empire in 1377. The Muslim trading networks that later emerged, including Samudra Pasai, eventually replaced Srivijaya’s commercial hegemony.
