The Fortress of the East
Portuguese Malacca was the period of Portuguese rule over Malacca from 1511 to 1641. During this time, the city was transformed into a European-style fortress and a center of Portuguese trade and missionary activity in Asia, before it was conquered by the Dutch, marking the end of Portugal’s colonial presence in the Malay Archipelago.

The Conquest
In 1511, Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Malacca, transforming the city into a European-style fortress. The fortress, known as A Famosa, became the symbol of Portuguese power in the East.
Portuguese Rule
During the period of Portuguese rule, Malacca became a center of trade and missionary activity. The Portuguese introduced Catholicism and established a Luso-Asian community that survives to this day as the Kristang community.
The Dutch Conquest
In 1641, the Dutch conquered Malacca, ending Portuguese rule and marking the beginning of Dutch dominance in the region.
