Kolonialisme Portugis di Indonesia

English (EN)

The First European Empire

Portuguese colonialism in the Indonesian archipelago began in 1511 with the capture of Malacca by Admiral Afonso de Albuquerque and lasted until 1641, when the city fell to the Dutch. This 130-year period shattered the region’s established trade networks, introduced Christianity and European military technology, and left a lasting linguistic and cultural imprint on the islands.

The Conquest of Malacca

In 1511, Afonso de Albuquerque captured Malacca, the greatest emporium in the Eastern world. This conquest gave Portugal control over the strategic Strait of Malacca and opened the door to the spice trade.

The Spice Islands

From Malacca, the Portuguese pushed eastward to the Spice Islands (Maluku). They established forts in Ternate and Tidore, controlling the production and trade of cloves and nutmeg.

The Legacy

Portuguese rule left a lasting legacy:

  • Language: Portuguese loanwords in Indonesian and Malay.
  • Religion: Catholicism in parts of Flores, Timor, and Maluku.
  • Culture: Luso-Asian communities like the Kristang.
