Zheng He and the Spread of Islam

English (EN)

The connection between Admiral Zheng He’s voyages (1405–1433) and the spread of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago is one of the most overlooked yet consequential narratives in Southeast Asian history. Unlike the violent spread of Islam in other regions, the Islamization of Java and the eastern islands occurred remarkably peacefully — and Zheng He’s fleet was present at the precise moment when this transformation began.

Zheng He: A Muslim Admiral

Zheng He was born into a Muslim family in Yunnan. His father and grandfather were Hajj pilgrims. He spoke Arabic, was familiar with Islamic law and traditions, and was deeply respected by Muslim communities across the Indian Ocean. His personal faith was not a private matter—it was a diplomatic asset that opened doors in ports where other Chinese envoys could not enter.

The Fleet as a “Floating Madrasa”

Zheng He’s fleet was not merely a naval expedition. It was a floating city of 27,000 people, many of whom were Muslims: interpreters, merchants, navigators, and religious scholars from China’s coastal Muslim communities. Every time the fleet docked, these men engaged with local rulers and traders, sharing Islamic knowledge in a way that was non-confrontational and culturally sensitive.

The Peaceful Model of Conversion

Unlike the later Dutch or Portuguese, the Chinese fleet never forced conversion. Instead:

  1. Diplomatic respect: Zheng He recognized local rulers and their traditions.
  2. Economic access: Muslim merchants gained trade privileges, which gave Islamic communities economic influence.
  3. Cultural prestige: Chinese Ming ceramics and titles were distributed as gifts, elevating those who aligned with the fleet.

This created a powerful incentive for local rulers to adopt Islamic practices—not because they were forced, but because it was advantageous.

The East Java Connection

The fleet visited the north coast of Java multiple times, especially Gresik, Tuban, and Surabaya. These were precisely the areas where Islam first took root on the island. Historical records indicate that:

  • Gresik: Visited by Zheng He’s fleet in 1413 and 1430. The tomb of Maulana Malik Ibrahim (the first of the Wali Songo) is located here — and local traditions link it to Chinese Muslim influence.
  • Semarang: The city is named after Zheng He (“Sam Po Kong” in Hokkien). The oldest mosque in Semarang was originally a Chinese-style building and later converted into a mosque.

The Wali Songo Connection

The Wali Songo (Nine Saints) who are credited with spreading Islam across Java in the 15th–16th centuries were active immediately after Zheng He’s final voyage (1433). Some historians suggest:

  • Several of the Wali Songo may have been descendants or followers of Chinese Muslim traders who arrived with Zheng He’s fleet.
  • Their method of preaching — blending Islamic teachings with local Javanese culture — mirrors the cultural accommodation that was characteristic of Zheng He’s diplomatic style.
  • Sunan Kalijaga (1450–1513), the most famous Wali Songo, is said to have studied under a Chinese Muslim teacher.

The Malacca Factor

Zheng He’s alliance with the Malacca Sultanate was crucial. The sultanate became the region’s premier Islamic port — and its rise coincided with the peak of Zheng He’s expeditions. The same Muslim merchants who sailed with Zheng He later became the merchants who connected Malacca to the Islamic world.

Why This Matters

The spread of Islam in Indonesia did not happen through conquest or coercion. It happened through trade, marriage, and prestige. Zheng He’s fleet was the most visible symbol of Chinese prestige in the 15th century, and its association with Islamic merchants created the conditions for a peaceful religious transition.

Bahasa Indonesia (ID)

Zheng He: Laksamana Muslim

Zheng He lahir di keluarga Muslim Yunnan.

Armada Zheng He bukan sekadar ekspedisi angkatan laut. Banyak yang Muslim: penerjemah, pedagang, dan ulama.

Model Perdamaian

Armada Tiongkok tidak pernah memaksa konversi. Sebaliknya: diplomasi, akses ekonomi, dan prestise budaya.

Koneksi Jawa Timur

Koneksi Wali Songo

Wali Songo aktif segera setelah pelayaran terakhir Zheng He.

Faktor Malaka

Aliansi Zheng He dengan Kesultanan Malaka sangat penting.

Mengapa Ini Penting
