Batavia

Batavia was the colonial capital of the Dutch East Indies, established by the VOC under Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen in 1619 on the site of the port city of Jayakarta. It served as the administrative, military, and commercial center of Dutch power in Asia for over three centuries.

Founding
Coen captured Jayakarta in 1619, destroyed the city, and built a new fortified settlement named Batavia—after the Latin name for the Netherlands. The city was designed as a Dutch city in the tropics, complete with canals and Dutch-style architecture.
The Colonial Capital
Batavia became the heart of the VOC’s Asian empire, the center of the spice trade, and the hub of Dutch colonial administration. It was a city of immense wealth and immense inequality, home to Dutch officials, Indos (Eurasians), Chinese merchants, and enslaved peoples from across the archipelago.
Decline
By the late 18th century, Batavia was plagued by disease and decay. The canals became polluted, and malaria devastated the population. In the 19th century, the Dutch built a new administrative center in the cooler hills of Weltevreden (now Central Jakarta).
Batavia Today
Batavia is now Jakarta, the capital of modern Indonesia. The old city—Kota Tua—preserves remnants of the Batavia era.
