The Aceh War

The Aceh War had been raging for decades when Van Heutsz took command. He adopted a strategy of “castle-building” — constructing fortified bases across Aceh to isolate and defeat the guerrilla forces. He also used the advice of Snouck Hurgronje, a Dutch scholar who had studied Acehnese society.

The Strategy

Van Heutsz’s strategy included:

  • Castle-building: Constructing fortified bases across Aceh
  • Co-opting local elites: Offering rewards to Acehnese nobles who would collaborate
  • Isolating resistance: Cutting off guerrilla fighters from supplies and support

The Outcome

By 1903, the last Acehnese sultan had been captured, and the resistance was effectively over. Van Heutsz’s campaign brought an end to the longest war in Dutch colonial history.

Story Hook: The Final Campaign

In 1903, J.B. van Heutsz received word that the last Acehnese sultan had been captured. The war that had lasted for thirty years was finally over. He wrote in his report: “The resistance is broken. Aceh is pacified. The war is over.” But he knew that the victory would not be remembered as a triumph — it would be remembered as a tragedy.

“The war is over. Aceh is pacified. But I know that this victory will not be celebrated by the people of Aceh. It will be remembered as a tragedy — a tragedy of war, of loss, of resistance crushed. The war is over, but the memory of it will endure.” — J.B. van Heutsz
