The End of an Era

The Fall of Aceh (1903–1904) marked the end of the Sultanate of Aceh and the completion of Dutch colonial control over the entire Indonesian archipelago[reference:107]. After more than thirty years of war, the last independent kingdom in the region had fallen[reference:108].

The Capture of Cut Nyak Dhien

After Teuku Umar’s death in 1899, his wife Cut Nyak Dhien continued the resistance for another nine years[reference:115]. She was captured by Dutch forces in 1901[reference:116] and exiled[reference:117]. She died in 1908[reference:118].

The Surrender of the Sultan

In 1903, Sultan Muhammad Da’ud Syah II surrendered to the Dutch[reference:119]. The Sultanate of Aceh was formally dissolved and Aceh was annexed into the Dutch East Indies.

The Unfinished War

Even after the Sultan’s surrender, the war did not truly end. Sporadic guerrilla resistance continued until 1913-1914. Non-violent resistance persisted into the colonial period[reference:127].
