The Battle
On the morning of 14 April 1873, General Köhler led a Dutch attack on the Acehnese fortress of Batee Iliek, a stronghold defending the capital, Banda Aceh. The Acehnese defenders, led by local ulama and village chiefs, fought with extraordinary ferocity. Köhler was shot and killed by an Acehnese sniper while leading his troops, becoming the highest-ranking Dutch officer to die in battle during the entire Aceh War.
The Aftermath
The Dutch retreat was humiliating. The first expedition was a complete failure. The Acehnese, emboldened by the victory, continued their resistance with renewed spirit. The Dutch realized they could not defeat Aceh with a single campaign. The war would not be won quickly—it would drag on for three decades.
Legacy
The Battle of Batee Iliek became a symbol of Acehnese resistance. It inspired generations of fighters, including Teuku Umar and Cut Nyak Dhien, who continued the struggle long after the Dutch had captured the capital.

Story Hook: The General’s Fall
On 14 April 1873, General Köhler led his troops toward the fortress of Batee Iliek. He was confident, certain that the Acehnese would be easily defeated. He did not know that the Acehnese had been preparing for this day for months—that they had fortified their positions, prayed for victory, and vowed to fight to the death. As he raised his sword to order the charge, a single shot rang out. The general fell. The Dutch troops, shocked and leaderless, broke and fled.
“The general fell, and with him fell the Dutch dream of a quick victory. The Acehnese had won. But the war was just beginning. The general was dead, but the war was alive.” — An Acehnese oral account of the battle
