The Expedition

In 1873, Köhler was tasked with leading the first Dutch expedition against the Sultanate of Aceh. The Dutch believed the campaign would be brief and that Aceh would be easily conquered. Köhler’s forces landed in Aceh and advanced toward the capital, Banda Aceh.

The Battle of Batee Iliek

On 14 April 1873, Köhler led his troops against the Acehnese fortress of Batee Iliek. The Acehnese defenders fought with extraordinary ferocity. Köhler was shot and killed by an Acehnese sniper while leading his troops. The Dutch retreat was humiliating.

Legacy

Köhler’s death was a turning point in the Aceh War. It proved that the war would not be a quick victory for the Dutch, and it inspired the Acehnese resistance. His name is remembered in Dutch military history as a tragic figure, and in Acehnese history as a symbol of their victory.
