The Birth of Batavia

The Fall of Jayakarta was the 1619 conquest of the port city of Jayakarta by Dutch forces under Jan Pieterszoon Coen, who destroyed the city and built a new fortress-town named Batavia. This event marked the beginning of Dutch colonial domination in Java and the birth of the city that would become Jakarta, the capital of modern Indonesia.

The Context

Jayakarta was a port city on the north coast of Java, controlled by the Sultanate of Banten. The VOC had a trading post nearby, but relations with Banten were tense. Coen saw an opportunity to establish a Dutch stronghold in Java.

The Conquest

In 1619, Coen attacked and conquered Jayakarta, destroying the city and driving out its inhabitants. He built a new fortress on the ruins, named Batavia after the Latin name for the Netherlands. Batavia became the capital of the Dutch East Indies and remained the center of Dutch colonial power in Asia for over three centuries.

The Legacy

The Fall of Jayakarta marked the beginning of Dutch colonial domination in Java. Batavia became a symbol of Dutch power—a fortified city of canals, warehouses, and Dutch-style houses. Today, the city is known as Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
