Jan Pieterszoon Coen

English (EN)

Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587–1629) was the Governor-General of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) who is remembered as both the architect of Dutch power in Asia and the perpetrator of one of the first documented genocides in modern colonial history. He was a master of commercial logic and extreme violence.

The Rise of Coen

Coen joined the VOC as a junior merchant and rose quickly. In 1618, he was appointed Governor-General. His vision was straightforward: the VOC would not be a mere trading company; it would be a territorial power that controlled production, shipping, and markets through military force.

The Banda Massacre

Coen’s most infamous act was the Banda Massacre of 1621. Coen understood that the monopoly on nutmeg could only be achieved if all independent producers were eliminated. He invaded the Banda Islands, destroyed its villages, and killed or enslaved the vast majority of the population. This act allowed the VOC to secure a 100% monopoly on the nutmeg trade for 150 years.

The Founding of Batavia

In 1619, Coen conquered Jakarta, razed the existing city, and founded batavia—the fortified capital of the VOC’s Asian empire. The city was not just a trading post; it was a military fortress designed to project Dutch power across the archipelago and challenge Portuguese and English rivals.

Coen’s Logic: Violence as Business Strategy

Coen was not motivated by religious zeal or racial hatred. His violence was calculated. His approach was to reduce the cost of doing business by eliminating competition entirely. He wrote: “It is necessary to destroy the Bandanese once and for all… for they are the only ones who prevent us from having a permanent monopoly.”

Legacy and Memory

Coen’s legacy is deeply contested. In the Netherlands, he was long celebrated as a national hero. In Indonesia, he is remembered as a brutal colonizer. The contradictory memory of Coen reflects the unresolved tension between European commercial expansion and the violence that made it possible.
