Genosida di Nusantara

The Wounds That Remain
Genocide is a tragic chapter in Indonesian history—the systematic mass killings of the Banda Islands by the Dutch VOC (1621) and the anti-communist purges of 1965–1966. These acts of violence have left deep scars on the national psyche, whose full histories are still being uncovered and whose legacies continue to shape Indonesian society.

The Banda Massacre (1621)
In 1621, Jan Pieterszoon Coen ordered the conquest of the Banda Islands to secure a monopoly over nutmeg production. VOC forces killed, enslaved, or expelled nearly the entire population of the islands. This act of genocide was a turning point in Dutch colonial history.
The 1965–1966 Purges
In 1965, following the 30 September Movement, the Indonesian military, under the leadership of Suharto, began a campaign of mass violence against suspected communists and leftists. The purges resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, the destruction of the PKI, and the rise of Suharto’s New Order regime.
The Legacy
Both events remain deeply contested in Indonesian history. The Banda Massacre has been acknowledged by the Dutch government, but the 1965–1966 purges are still a subject of debate and denial in Indonesia.

Story Hook: The Unmarked Grave
In a village in Java, an old woman tells her grandson: “My father was killed in 1965. They took him away and never told us where. He is buried in a mass grave somewhere—we do not know where. We have never been able to pray at his grave. We have never been able to say goodbye. He is still missing, even after all these years.”
“There are graves everywhere in Indonesia that have no names. There are families everywhere that have no closure. The dead are still waiting to be remembered. The past is not past—it is still with us. And until we acknowledge it, we cannot heal.” — A survivor’s descendant
Visual Imagery
Genocide is often depicted in art and photography as:
- The mass graves—unmarked, hidden, forgotten.
- The photographs of the dead—faces that cannot be identified.
- The empty houses—families that disappeared.
- The monuments—memorials to the victims.
- The silence—the refusal to speak of what happened.
