Gerakan 30 September

English (EN)

The Night That Changed a Nation

The 30 September Movement (Gerakan 30 September, or G30S), also known as Gestapu (from Gerakan Tiga Puluh September), was an attempted coup or “pseudo-coup”[reference:0] that began on the night of September 30, 1965, in Jakarta, Indonesia. A group of military officers, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Untung of the Presidential Bodyguard[reference:1][reference:2], kidnapped and murdered six senior army generals[reference:3][reference:4][reference:5]. This event triggered a chain reaction with catastrophic consequences: a mass anti-communist purge that killed hundreds of thousands of people, the destruction of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), the gradual ousting of President Sukarno, and the rise of General Suharto to power[reference:7].

The 30 September Movement is one of the most significant and traumatic events in modern Indonesian history, its narrative and legacy still fiercely debated and deeply politicized[reference:9]. It is the central event upon which Suharto’s “New Order” regime built its legitimacy and justified three decades of authoritarian rule[reference:10].

The Coup That Wasn’t: The Movement’s Actions

On the evening of September 30, 1965, the conspirators, identifying as the “30 September Movement,” began their operation[reference:11]. They mobilized troops to seize control of key strategic locations in Jakarta, including the telecommunications center and the central radio broadcast station[reference:12][reference:13].

Their primary targets, however, were the top brass of the Indonesian Army’s anti-communist faction[reference:14]. The generals were kidnapped from their homes in the early hours of October 1[reference:15][reference:16]. The victims, whose bodies were later found in an old well at a place called Lubang Buaya (Crocodile Hole) in East Jakarta, included:

  • General Ahmad Yani, the Army Commander[reference:18]
  • Major General R. Suprapto
  • Major General Haryono
  • Major General S. Parman
  • Brigadier General D.I. Pandjaitan
  • Brigadier General Sutoyo Siswomiharjo

In addition, First Lieutenant Tendean, an aide to Defense Minister General Nasution, was also killed[reference:19]. General Nasution himself narrowly escaped the assassination attempt[reference:20].

The Announcement and the Response

At approximately 7:15 AM on October 1, Lieutenant-Colonel Untung announced over the state radio that the movement had “forestalled” a coup attempt by a “Generals’ Council”[reference:21][reference:22]. He declared that the action was taken to protect President Sukarno, whose health was supposedly in danger[reference:23][reference:24], and announced the formation of a “Revolutionary Council” which would now govern[reference:25][reference:26]. Crucially, however, the movement took no action to arrest or neutralize President Sukarno himself[reference:27].

The response from the army was swift. Major General Suharto, commander of the Army’s Strategic Reserve (KOSTRAD), took command[reference:28]. He moved decisively, convincing the movement’s troops in central Jakarta to surrender and then storming their headquarters at the Halim Air Force base. Within 48 hours, Suharto had effectively defeated the 30 September Movement.

The Aftermath: A Pretext for Mass Murder

Suharto immediately capitalized on the situation. He accused the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) of masterminding the movement[reference:32][reference:33] and launched a nationwide campaign to “destroy the PKI”. What followed was one of the worst cases of mass violence in the 20th century[reference:35].

Beginning in October 1965, an “orgy of violence” swept across Java and Bali. The army, often aided by civilian militias, systematically arrested, tortured, and murdered hundreds of thousands of Indonesians suspected of being communists or left-leaning[reference:38]. Estimates of the death toll vary widely, with historians suggesting a range of 200,000 to 800,000 people killed. Countless more were imprisoned without trial, exiled, or stigmatized for decades.

The Rise of Suharto

The destruction of the PKI was the key that unlocked power for Suharto. As the army became the dominant political force, Sukarno’s authority was fatally weakened. In March 1966, Suharto forced Sukarno to delegate extensive powers to him[reference:43], and in March 1967, Sukarno was formally replaced as president. Suharto then consolidated his rule, establishing the “New Order” (Orde Baru), an authoritarian, anti-communist, and pro-Western regime that would last for 32 years[reference:45].

Official Narrative and Historical Debate

The events of 1965 have been the subject of intense historical debate, with the “official” version—that the PKI was the sole mastermind—serving as the founding myth of the New Order[reference:47]. This narrative has been challenged by scholars like John Roosa, who argue the movement’s true nature is more complex[reference:48]. Sukarno himself referred to the event as GESTOK (Gerakan Satu Oktober, or 1 October Movement)[reference:49], a term used to distance the PKI’s involvement.

The lingering uncertainty surrounding who masterminded the movement, its aims, and its connection to the international Cold War context continues to be a subject of investigation and controversy[reference:50].

Story Hook: The Archivist’s Discovery

In 1998, in the chaotic final days of Suharto’s New Order, a young archivist named Ratih working at a military records office in Jakarta discovers a dusty, unmarked file box. Inside are transcripts of interrogations from 1965, but not the ones that were officially published.

The transcripts tell a different story. They mention a meeting, not of the PKI, but of a secretive faction within the army. A faction that feared Sukarno’s growing closeness to the communists and sought a pretext to eliminate his support base. They speak of “using the generals” as a sacrifice to justify the purge.

Ratih realizes she has stumbled upon a document that could rewrite the history of her nation. She must decide: destroy the files to protect the fragile peace of the Reformasi era, or reveal a truth that could tear the country apart once more. As she reads, a shadow falls across the room. A man in a military uniform is standing in the doorway.

“The past is not dead. In Indonesia, it is not even past. They buried the bodies in Lubang Buaya, but the story of what really happened… they buried that in a deeper hole. The question is, are you brave enough to dig it up?” — Ratih, a fictional archivist

Visual Imagery

The 30 September Movement is often depicted in art, photography, and film as:

  • The imposing, brutalist monument of the Monumen Pancasila Sakti at Lubang Buaya, a site of official memory.
  • The black-and-white photographs of the generals, martyred “Heroes of the Revolution.”
  • The chaotic scenes of the radio station being seized, a symbol of the battle for the narrative.
  • The mass graves, the endless rows of corpses, a visual testament to the scale of the violence (as seen in The Act of Killing).
  • The silent, fearful faces of prisoners, their humanity stripped away by the state.
  • Suharto, in military fatigues, a figure of stern authority, seizing control.

  • Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Panglima Angkatan Darat[reference:122]
  • Mayor Jenderal R. Suprapto
  • Mayor Jenderal Haryono
  • Mayor Jenderal S. Parman
  • Brigadir Jenderal D.I. Pandjaitan
  • Brigadir Jenderal Sutoyo Siswomiharjo

Suharto segera memanfaatkan situasi.

Story Hook: Penemuan Arsiparis

— Ratih, seorang arsiparis fiksi
