Early Life and Education
Habibie was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi, the fourth of eight siblings. He studied aviation and aerospace engineering in Germany and the Netherlands, eventually becoming a director at a major aerospace company.
The Suharto Years
Habibie returned to Indonesia in the mid-1970s, convinced he could help his country leap-frog from a poor agricultural economy to one based on high technology. Suharto gave him his own government department and unlimited funds to build Southeast Asia’s first aircraft industry. From 1978 to 1998, Habibie served as Minister of State for Research and Technology. In March 1998, Suharto appointed him vice president. Two months later, amidst the chaos of the Asian financial crisis, Suharto resigned—and Habibie was thrust into the presidency.
The Presidency: 17 Months That Changed Indonesia
- Political Liberalization: He formed a new cabinet, released political prisoners, allowed a free press, and established a committee to draft less-restrictive political laws.
- East Timor: He offered East Timor a choice between special autonomy and independence, with the territory ultimately choosing independence.
- Free Elections: He arranged for free parliamentary and presidential elections in 1999.
Legacy
Habibie is remembered as the president who dismantled authoritarian rule and laid the foundation for Indonesian democracy.

Story Hook: The Engineer’s Choice
In May 1998, in the chaos of Jakarta, B.J. Habibie is called to the presidential palace. Suharto has resigned. Habibie, who was vice president just two months ago, is now the President of Indonesia—a position he never sought, a role he never prepared for. He is an engineer, not a politician. He dreams of planes, not power. But now, the nation is collapsing. The economy is in ruins. Students are in the streets. And Habibie must decide: will he continue Suharto’s authoritarian system, or will he choose a different path?
“I am an engineer. Engineers build things—bridges, planes, cities. But now, I must build something I have never built before: a democracy. I do not know if I can do it. But I know that I must try.” — B.J. Habibie
Visual Imagery
B.J. Habibie is often depicted in art and photography as:
- A portrait of a serious, intense man in a dark suit, wearing glasses.
- The photograph of Habibie and his wife, Ainun—a love story that became legend.
- The student protests of 1998—Habibie facing the crowd.
- The East Timor referendum—Habibie signing the document that offered independence.
