The Engineer Who Became President
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie (25 June 1936 – 11 September 2019), more commonly known as B.J. Habibie, was the third President of Indonesia, serving from May 1998 to October 1999. His presidency lasted just 17 months — the shortest in Indonesian history — yet it was one of the most consequential, ushering in an era of democratic reform after three decades of authoritarian rule under the New Order.

Early Life and Education
Habibie was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi. He studied aviation and aerospace engineering in Germany and the Netherlands, eventually becoming a director at a major aerospace company.
The Suharto Years
Habibie returned to Indonesia in the mid-1970s, convinced he could help his country leap-frog from a poor agricultural economy to one based on high technology. From 1978 to 1998, he served as Minister of State for Research and Technology. In March 1998, Suharto appointed him vice president. Two months later, amidst the chaos of the Asian financial crisis, Suharto resigned — and Habibie was thrust into the presidency.

Story Hook: The Engineer’s Choice
In May 1998, in the chaos of Jakarta, B.J. Habibie was called to the presidential palace. Suharto had resigned. Habibie, who was vice president just two months ago, was now the President of Indonesia — a position he never sought, a role he never prepared for. He was an engineer, not a politician. He dreamed of planes, not power. But now, the nation was collapsing. He had to decide: continue Suharto’s authoritarian system, or choose a different path — a path of reform, freedom, and democracy.
“I am an engineer. Engineers build things — bridges, planes, cities. But now, I must build something I have never built before: a democracy. I do not know if I can do it. But I know that I must try.” — B.J. Habibie
