Story Hook: The Blind President’s Vision

In 1999, Gus Dur stands before the Indonesian parliament. He is about to be sworn in as president. He is nearly blind, his eyes clouded by cataracts, but he sees more clearly than most. He speaks of a Indonesia where Muslims and Christians, Javanese and Chinese, rich and poor, all stand as equals.

“They say I am blind. But I see more than those who have eyes. I see an Indonesia where every citizen is equal, where no one is a stranger, where the color of your skin and the name of your God do not determine your future. I cannot see your faces, but I can see your hearts. And I know that Indonesia’s heart is good.” — Abdurrahman Wahid

Visual Imagery

  • The photograph of Gus Dur with his trademark smile—a figure of warmth and wisdom.
  • The NU gatherings—Gus Dur speaking to crowds of followers.
  • The interfaith dialogues—Gus Dur shaking hands with Christian and Hindu leaders.
