Banten (also known as Bantam) is a historic port city on the north coast of Java, near the Sunda Strait. It was once the capital of the powerful Banten Sultanate (c. 16th–19th century), a major center of Islamic trade and learning that rivaled Malacca and Batavia.

The Sultanate
The Banten Sultanate was established in 1527 after the fall of the Sunda Kingdom. It quickly became a major power in Java, controlling the pepper trade and the Sunda Strait—a vital shipping route.
The Great Mosque
The Masjid Agung Banten (Great Mosque of Banten) was built in the 16th century and features distinctive architecture blending Javanese, Islamic, and Dutch elements—a symbol of Banten’s cultural synthesis.
Dutch Conquest
The Dutch VOC conquered Banten in 1682, reducing the sultanate to a vassal state. The city declined, and Batavia became the dominant port in the region.

Kesultanan Banten menguasai perdagangan lada dan Selat Sunda. Masjid Agung Banten dibangun pada abad ke-16. Belanda menaklukkan Banten pada 1682.
