Sunda Strait

English (EN)

The Sunda Strait is a narrow passage between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, connecting the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean. It is approximately 110 kilometers long and varies in width from 24 to 120 kilometers. The strait is one of the most historically significant waterways in the archipelago, serving as a major shipping route for centuries.

The strait is world-famous for being the location of the Krakatoa volcano, whose catastrophic 1883 eruption reshaped the geography of the region. The eruption generated tsunamis that killed over 36,000 people and caused a global climatic shift. Today, the strait remains an active volcanic zone.

Geologically, the Sunda Strait is part of the Sunda Shelf, a submerged extension of the Asian continental shelf. Its location at the convergence of tectonic plates makes it one of the most seismically active regions on Earth.

In the archipelago’s spiritual imagination, the Sunda Strait is believed to be a place where the boundary between the three realms is thin. The sea and the volcano together form a gateway to the Fourth Realm, and local legends speak of spirits that dwell beneath the waves. The mana-curse is said to have been sealed in the deep waters of the strait, and the 210-day-contract rhythm is mirrored in the volcanic cycles of Krakatoa.
