The Chinese-Javanese War Against the VOC

The Java War of 1741–1743 (historically known as the Chinese War or the Chinese-Javanese War) was a rebellion against the VOC that united two of Java’s largest communities: the Chinese diaspora and the Javanese.

Though often called “The Chinese War,” it was in fact a joint Chinese-Javanese uprising — a multi-ethnic alliance against a common colonial enemy.

The Spark: The 1740 Batavia Massacre

The rebellion was a direct consequence of the 1740 Batavia Massacre (Geger Pacinan), one of the most brutal events in colonial history.

DetailFact
DateOctober 1740
LocationBatavia (present-day Jakarta)
VictimsOver 8,000 Chinese residents killed
TriggerVOC fears of Chinese rebellion; colonial paranoia
AftermathChinese survivors fled Batavia and spread news of the massacre across Java

The VOC’s policies toward the Chinese had been growing increasingly oppressive since the 1690s: quotas, extortion, and arbitrary imprisonment. In October 1740, the colonial authorities decided on a brutal “solution.”

The Course of the War

DateEvent
October 1740Batavia Massacre — thousands of Chinese killed
1741Refugees spread word of the massacre; resistance spreads across Java
1741Chinese and Javanese forces form an alliance
1741Rebel forces seized the port of Lasem
1742Rebel troops advanced toward Surabaya and the VOC fortress
1743VOC forces, with reinforcements from the Netherlands, launched a counteroffensive
1743The rebellion was crushed; VOC regained control of Java

The Leadership: Khe Panjang (Kapitan Sepanjang)

The leader of the Chinese rebellion was a figure known as Khe Panjang (or Kapitan Sepanjang — “Captain Sepanjang”). Not much is known about his early life, but he was a charismatic leader who united Chinese and Javanese forces under a common banner.

The Battle of Lasem

Lasem — in modern-day Central Java — was one of the war’s key battlegrounds. The rebel alliance of Chinese and Javanese forces captured the port, forcing VOC troops to retreat. The battle demonstrated the effectiveness of the Chinese-Javanese alliance.

The VOC’s Counterattack

In 1743, the VOC launched a massive counteroffensive with reinforcements from the Netherlands and troops from other parts of the archipelago.

The “Joint Uprising” Thesis

Historians like Daradjadi have argued that this war should not be called “The Chinese War” at all. Instead, it was a Chinese-Javanese joint uprising against VOC domination.

“It was not a Chinese war. It was a war of the colonized — Chinese and Javanese together — against their colonizers.”
