Surabaya is the second-largest city in Indonesia, located on the northeastern coast of Java. It is the capital of East Java and serves as a major commercial, industrial, and naval center. The city is often called the “City of Heroes” (Kota Pahlawan) due to its pivotal role in the Indonesian independence struggle, particularly the Battle of Surabaya on 10 November 1945, which is now commemorated as Heroes’ Day.

Geography

Surabaya covers an area of 351 km² and has a population of approximately 2.87 million, making it one of the most densely populated cities in Indonesia. It lies on the Madura Strait and is a key port for trade between eastern and western Indonesia.

Economy

As the economic hub of East Java, Surabaya is home to major industries in manufacturing, shipping, and trade. Its Tanjung Perak Port is one of the busiest in the country.

Culture

Surabaya is a melting pot of Javanese, Madurese, Chinese, and Arab cultures. The city is famous for its unique culinary offerings, including Soto Ayam, Rujak Cingur, and Rawon.
