Story Hook: The Family Altar

In a Peranakan home in Jakarta, a family gathers at the family altar. Incense burns, offerings are placed, prayers are recited. The grandmother speaks to her grandchildren: “This altar is not just a piece of furniture. It is the heart of our family. Here, we remember our ancestors—those who came before us, those who crossed the sea, those who built our lives. When we pray here, we are not just praying for ourselves. We are praying for all those who came before us, and all those who will come after.”

“The ancestors are not dead. They are here, with us, in this altar, in this incense, in our memory. When we honor them, we honor ourselves. When we forget them, we forget who we are.” — A Peranakan grandmother

Visual Imagery

Confucianism in Indonesia is often depicted in art and photography as:

  • A Chinese temple (klenteng) in a Javanese city—red and gold, incense smoke rising.
  • The family altar—portraits of ancestors, offerings of fruit and incense.
  • Chinese New Year—lion dancers, red lanterns, family gatherings.
  • A Confucian ceremony—participants in traditional dress, performing rituals.
  • The Peranakan house—Chinese and Javanese elements blended.
