History
Hinduism arrived in the archipelago between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, brought by Indian traders. The earliest known Hindu kingdoms are Kutai (East Kalimantan, c. 400 CE) and Tarumanegara (West Java, c. 400 CE). The Shailendra and Sanjaya dynasties later built monumental temples, including Borobudur (Buddhist-Hindu synthesis) and Prambanan.
Balinese Hinduism
After the Majapahit empire’s decline in the 16th century, Hindu communities retreated to Bali, where they preserved their faith. Balinese Hinduism is a distinctive tradition, blending Indian theology with Javanese cosmology and indigenous animist beliefs.
