History

The Warmadewa Dynasty was established in the 10th century CE, replacing the earlier, less well-documented rulers of Bali. The dynasty’s name is recorded in stone inscriptions found across Bali, particularly in the area of Gianyar.

King Sri Candrabhayasingha Warmadewa

The most famous ruler of the dynasty was King Sri Candrabhayasingha Warmadewa, who ruled in the 10th century. In 962 CE, he commissioned the construction of the sacred spring temple at Tampaksiring—the temple we now know as Tirta Empul.

Tirta Empul

The construction of Tirta Empul in 962 CE was a defining moment in Balinese history. The temple, built around a sacred spring, became the most important pilgrimage site on the island and remains central to Balinese Hinduism today.

Unification of Bali

The Warmadewa Dynasty united the various kingdoms of Bali under a single rule, creating a unified Balinese state for the first time.

Decline

The dynasty declined in the 14th century, eventually being replaced by the Majapahit-influenced Gelgel Dynasty.

In 962 CE, King Sri Candrabhayasingha Warmadewa stands on a hill in Tampaksiring. He has a vision: a spring of holy water, emerging from the earth, where the gods will come to purify themselves. He orders the construction of a temple around the spring, a place where the people of Bali can come to cleanse their souls.
