Located in the village of Manukaya, Tampaksiring, Gianyar Regency, the temple is built around a natural spring that has flowed for over a thousand years[reference:0][reference:1]. The Legend of Tirta Empul

According to local tradition, the origin of Tirta Empul is linked to the legend of King Mayadenawa, a tyrannical ruler who forbade his people from performing religious ceremonies[reference:3]. This act provoked the anger of the gods, led by Bhatara Indra, who engaged the king in a great battle[reference:4]. After being defeated, Mayadenawa fled north toward Tampaksiring. Pursued by Indra’s forces, he used his magical powers to create a poisoned spring. The troops drank the water and died[reference:5]. Seeing this, Bhatara Indra thrust his spear into the ground, causing a new spring of holy water to emerge. This spring became known as Tirta Empul, and its waters were used to revive the fallen gods[reference:6][reference:7]. In another version of the legend, the Hindu god Indra struck the earth with his vajra (thunderbolt) to create the spring[reference:8].

History

Pura Tirta Empul was built around the sacred spring in 962 CE during the reign of the Warmadewa dynasty under King Sri Candrabhayasingha Warmadewa[reference:9][reference:10]. A stone inscription found at nearby Pura Sakenan mentions the formation of two ponds at the site, dating to the late ninth or tenth century—revealing that this place has been venerated for more than one thousand years[reference:11][reference:12].

The Temple Complex

The temple is divided into three courtyards[reference:13]:

  • Jaba Sisi (Outer Courtyard): Visitors pass through a candi bentar (split gate) and encounter large Dwarapala guardian statues with intricate gold-toned details[reference:14].
  • Jaba Tengah (Middle Courtyard): The most sacred area, containing two purification pools with thirty spouts of holy water[reference:15][reference:16]. Each spout is associated with a different function: Pengelukatan, Pebersihan, Sudamala, and Pancuran Cetik (the “poison” spout)[reference:17]. Balinese Hindus perform the melukat ritual here, standing under the flowing water to cleanse themselves spiritually[reference:18].
  • Jeroan (Inner Courtyard): The main worship area, less frequented by tourists, containing a large spring pond surrounded by sacred structures[reference:19].

The Melukat Ritual

Melukat is a Balinese purification ritual using holy spring water[reference:20][reference:21]. The ceremony aims to cleanse the body, mind, and soul of negative energies, helping participants feel calmer and more balanced[reference:22]. For Balinese Hindus, melukat is an important act of spiritual renewal, rejuvenation, and a way to seek safety and protection[reference:23].

Notable Visitors

Pura Tirta Empul has hosted several notable international visitors, including former US President Barack Obama, who visited on June 27, 2017[reference:24].

Story Hook: The Keeper of the Springs

In the village of Manukaya, an old pemangku (temple priest) named Jero Mangku Wayan has guarded the springs of Tirta Empul for forty years. He knows every spout, every legend, every ritual that has been performed at the temple for over a thousand years. But now, he faces a crisis. The government has proposed building a dam upstream to supply water to the growing tourist industry. The engineers say the springs will not be affected. Jero Mangku Wayan knows they are wrong. He has seen the water levels drop in the dry season; he has felt the spirits of the springs growing restless. He must decide: allow the dam to be built, sacrificing the holy water for the sake of progress, or resist, risking his position and his life to protect the sacred springs that have flowed for a thousand years.

“The water does not belong to us. It belongs to the gods. We are not its owners—we are its guardians. And a guardian who fails to protect what is sacred is no guardian at all.” — Jero Mangku Wayan, a temple priest of Tirta Empul

Visual Imagery

Tirta Empul is often depicted in art and photography as:

  • The thirty spouts of holy water, their streams catching the sunlight, cascading into the purification pools.
  • Devotees standing under the flowing water, their hands clasped in prayer, their faces serene—a moment of spiritual renewal.
  • The candi bentar (split gate), framed by ancient stone carvings, a threshold between the mundane and the sacred.
  • The spring pool in the inner courtyard, its green algae and small fish visible through the clear water, surrounded by vividly painted sacred structures.
  • The Dwarapala guardians, their gold-toned details gleaming, standing watch over the entrance.
  • President Barack Obama walking through the temple complex, a moment when global politics met ancient spirituality.
