In the Archipelago
In Indonesian Hinduism, Indra is venerated as the leader of the gods. His most famous legend in the archipelago is the defeat of King Mayadenawa, the tyrannical ruler who forbade religious ceremonies. According to the legend, Indra led the gods in battle against Mayadenawa. After defeating him, Indra struck the earth with his spear, creating the sacred spring of Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring, Bali.
The Vajra
Indra’s weapon, the vajra, is a thunderbolt-like implement that represents the power of indestructibility and the force of divine justice. In Indonesian iconography, Indra is often depicted carrying the vajra.
In the Trimurti
While Indra is not part of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), he is the most powerful of the Vedic gods and serves as the protector of the cosmic order.

Story Hook: The King’s Thunder
In the village of Manukaya, near Tirta Empul, an old priest tells the story of Indra to a group of pilgrims. He describes how Indra, furious at the tyranny of King Mayadenawa, hurled his thunderbolt from the heavens, splitting the earth and creating the holy spring. But the priest adds something that is not in the official legend: “The vajra that struck the earth is still here, buried beneath the spring. It is not a weapon anymore—it is a source of healing. The thunderbolt that once destroyed now purifies. That is the power of the gods: they turn destruction into creation.”
“Indra’s thunderbolt is not just a weapon. It is a promise—a promise that no tyrant will rule forever, that the heavens will always send their power to protect the innocent, and that even the most destructive force can become a source of healing.” — A priest of Tirta Empul
