The Preserver of Cosmic Order
Vishnu is the Hindu god of preservation, one of the Trimurti alongside Brahma (the Creator) and Shiva (the Destroyer). He is the protector of cosmic order (dharma), descending to earth in times of crisis to restore balance. His ten avatars (dashavatara) include the epic heroes Rama and Krishna, who are central figures in Javanese and Balinese wayang traditions.

Story Hook: The Avatar’s Arrival
In a village in Central Java, a shadow puppet master (dalang) prepares to perform the story of Vishnu’s avatar. He chooses the story of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya—the story of exile, loss, and return.
As he arranges the puppets on the screen, he speaks to the audience: “Vishnu is not a distant god. He is the god who comes down to us, who walks among us, who suffers with us. When the world is broken, he comes. When dharma has been forgotten, he reminds us. When we have lost our way, he shows us the path.”
He lights the lamp, and the shadows begin to dance.
