Tampaksiring is a district in central Bali, located in the Gianyar Regency. It is one of the island’s most important spiritual and historical sites, home to the sacred spring of Tirta Empul and the Tampaksiring Presidential Palace.

Tirta Empul

Tampaksiring is the site of Tirta Empul, the most sacred water temple in Bali. Built in 962 CE, the temple’s holy spring has flowed for over a thousand years, serving as a site for the melukat purification ritual.

The Palace

The Tampaksiring Presidential Palace was built by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, during the 1950s. The palace serves as a retreat for the president and is used for official government meetings and international conferences.

Story Hook: The Two Buildings

In Tampaksiring, two buildings stand side by side: the thousand-year-old Tirta Empul temple and the modern Tampaksiring Palace built by Sukarno. A pilgrim and a palace official pass each other on the road—one carrying flowers and incense, the other carrying documents and schedules. They are on different paths, but they are both here because of the same belief: that Tampaksiring is a sacred place, where the power of the earth meets the purpose of the nation.
