The Rise of Sanjaya

The Sanjaya Dynasty was founded by King Sanjaya, who is recorded in the Canggal Inscription of 732 CE. The dynasty established the Mataram Kingdom in Central Java and built Hindu temples across the region.

Prambanan

The dynasty’s greatest achievement was the construction of the Prambanan temple complex, a masterpiece of Javanese architecture dedicated to the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple’s reliefs are among the finest examples of Javanese stone carving.

The Rivalry with Shailendra

The Sanjaya Dynasty coexisted and competed with the Buddhist Shailendra Dynasty. This rivalry created one of the most brilliant periods of Javanese art and culture.
