The Language of the Gods
Sanskrit is an ancient Indo-Aryan language that served as the language of Hindu-Buddhist scholarship, literature, and ritual in the Indonesian archipelago for over a thousand years. It is the language of the Yupa inscriptions, the Kakawin epics, and the prayers of Balinese Hinduism, embodying the deep cultural and spiritual connections between the archipelago and the Indian subcontinent.

Sanskrit in the Archipelago
Sanskrit was introduced to the archipelago through trade and cultural exchange with India. It was used for inscriptions, literature, and religious texts. The Yupa inscriptions of Kutai (c. 400 CE) are the oldest known Sanskrit inscriptions in Indonesia.
The Literary Legacy
Sanskrit was the language of the Kakawin epics, including the Kakawin Bharatayuddha and the Kakawin Nagarakretagama. These works were composed in Old Javanese but drew heavily on Sanskrit vocabulary and literary conventions.
