Surapati (1660–1706) was a Javanese national hero and rebel leader — a warrior who led a rebellion against the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the late 17th century, becoming a symbol of resistance against colonialism.
Born in East Java, he was a member of the Mataram Sultanate’s military forces before leading a rebellion against the VOC. He was a fierce opponent of Dutch colonialism and fought for the independence of Java. After a series of battles, he was forced to retreat to Bali, where he continued his resistance against the Dutch.
Surapati’s legacy is one of courage and resistance.
