The Traveler from the West

Ibn Battuta (1304–1368/69) was a 14th-century Moroccan traveler and scholar whose 30-year journey across the Islamic world brought him to the shores of the Malay Archipelago. He visited Sumatra and witnessed the rich cultures, flourishing trade, and Islamic kingdoms of the region — one of the few pre-modern travelers to leave a written account of the Nusantara world.

The Journey

Ibn Battuta’s journey began in 1325 with a pilgrimage to Mecca. Over the next 30 years, he traveled across North Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, and China, covering approximately 75,000 miles. His travels are recorded in the Rihla (“The Travels”), one of the most important travel accounts of the medieval period.

In the Malay Archipelago

Ibn Battuta visited the Malay Archipelago in 1345–1346. He sailed from India to Sumatra, where he visited the Sultanate of Pasai in northern Sumatra. He described Pasai as a thriving Islamic kingdom, with a just ruler, flourishing trade, and scholars from across the Islamic world. He also noted the presence of Arab and Persian traders, the wealth of the kingdom, and the spread of Islam in the region.

The Rihla’s Significance

Ibn Battuta’s account is one of the few pre-modern descriptions of the Malay Archipelago. His observations provide valuable information about the region’s trade, religion, and political structures in the 14th century.

Story Hook: The Traveler’s Notebook

In 1345, Ibn Battuta sat on the deck of a ship sailing toward Sumatra. He had traveled across the known world — from Morocco to India, from the desert to the sea. Now, he was approaching a land he had only heard about in the stories of merchants — a land of spices, kingdoms, and new peoples. He opened his notebook and began to write: “I sailed from India to Sumatra, a land of dense forests and thriving trade. The people are just, the kingdom is wealthy, and Islam has taken root here. This is a land of wonders…”

“I have seen the pyramids of Egypt, the markets of Damascus, the palaces of India. But nothing prepared me for the islands of the East. The air is thick with the scent of cloves, the people are warm, the faith is strong. This is a world unto itself — a world that the West has yet to discover.” — Ibn Battuta, Rihla
