Bau-Bau is a historic port city on the island of Buton, Southeast Sulawesi. It was the former capital of the Buton Sultanate (also known as the Sultanate of Butung), a maritime kingdom that flourished from the 14th to the 20th century. Bau-Bau is known for its fortress walls, Islamic heritage, and strategic position in the spice and maritime trade routes of eastern Indonesia.

The Buton Sultanate

The Buton Sultanate was established in the 14th century and became an important center of Islamic learning and trade in eastern Indonesia. The sultanate was known for its maritime power and its strategic location along the spice routes connecting Maluku to Java and Makassar.

The Fortress of Bau-Bau

Bau-Bau is famous for its fortress walls (benteng), which stretch for kilometers around the old city. The walls were built to protect the sultanate from attacks by pirates and rival kingdoms. Today, they are among the best-preserved colonial-era fortifications in Indonesia.
