Makassar is the largest city on the island of sulawesi and the capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. With a population of 1.42 million, it is the gateway to eastern Indonesia and a major center for trade and maritime transport.

History

Makassar was historically part of the Gowa Sultanate, one of the most powerful kingdoms in eastern Indonesia. The city was a key center of the spice trade and later became a hub for Dutch colonial administration in the eastern archipelago.

Culture

Makassar is the heart of Bugis and Makassarese culture. The city is famous for its vibrant culinary scene and traditional sailing ships, the Phinisi, which are still built in nearby shipyards.
