Tana Toraja—the “Land of the Toraja”—is a place where the boundary between the living and the dead is not a wall but a door. It is a region of mist, mountains, and rice terraces, a land where the houses point to the sky and the graves are carved into the cliffs. It is a place that has become known to the world for its elaborate funeral rituals, its buffalo sacrifices, and its profound philosophy of life and death.

The Toraja highlands are located in South Sulawesi, approximately 300 kilometers north of Makassar. The region is defined by its geography: a series of highland valleys surrounded by volcanic mountains, cut through by deep river gorges. The landscape is fertile, covered in rice terraces that climb the slopes of the hills, and shrouded in mist that gives the valleys an otherworldly quality.

The valleys are dotted with tongkonan houses, standing alone or in rows, their roofs rising above the rice fields.
