The Bugis (Bugis: To Ugi, Indonesian: Suku Bugis) are a seafaring ethnic group from South Sulawesi, numbering approximately 3 million people. They are renowned for their maritime skills, adventurous spirit, and extensive trading networks that span the entire archipelago and beyond.
Maritime Culture
The Bugis are historically one of the most important maritime peoples of Southeast Asia. They dominated inter-island trade, connecting the Indonesian archipelago to the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, and even Australia. Their navigational skills and shipbuilding expertise were legendary.
The Phinisi Ship
The Phinisi is the traditional Bugis sailing ship, built from ironwood, teak, and other local timbers. It is a world-renowned example of traditional maritime engineering, capable of sailing across oceans. Today, Phinisi ships are still built in the shipyards of Bulukumba, South Sulawesi.
Writing and Literature
The Bugis use a distinct script known as Lontara. This script is used to write Bugis-language texts, historical chronicles, and diaries. The Bugis also have a rich oral tradition, including epic poems and love stories.
Religion
The majority of Bugis are Muslim, but they also retain aspects of pre-Islamic belief. The Bugis religion is characterized by a strong respect for ancestors, whom they honor in traditional ceremonies.

The Bugis are among the most widely dispersed ethnic groups in Indonesia. Bugis communities can be found in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and throughout Eastern Indonesia.
